Googlers: The Cuchi Cuchi White Sangria Recipe (Clarico)

TUESDAY, JUNE 23, 2003 - Bunk Advice

A person recently told me that with interest rates at historical lows I should buy a home immediately. When I offered that I may be relocating in a year or two, he continued that $8-16K of equity was better than no equity at all.

Fair point, but if it sounds too good to be true, as the cliche goes, it just might be. I decided to seek a second opinon. AJ, a former Boston Real Estate Analyst exploded, "He's a FUCK-KING idiot!"

Here's a more delicate explanation: Low interest rates have been driving the Boston housing market and not an actual increase in housing demand. The potential long-term owner is relatively indifferent if his buy-in price is high and low interest rates keep his mortgage the same.

However, this assumes that housing value appreciates, and it does in the long run. But if the market dips, or worse, drops like it did in Boston in the 1980s, it could take years to recover.

Short term market volatility and recooping fees is the reason that people often say it's not worth buying unless you plan to be there three to five years.

Now I get it.

THURSDAY, JUNE 19, 2003 - WiFi Without Buying a $5 Cup of Coffee

Telephone and wireless giant, Verizon, has taken keen interest in Bell Canada's initiative to convert pay phones into 802.11b hotspots in places like train stations and hospitals. This is good news for Boston, which mostly offers this service at Starbucks, Borders, and cafes along the posh Newbury Street.

Another added benefit is retiring some sketchy looking phones which appear only slightly cleanier than the station toilets.

Local singer-songwriter, Deb Talan, has a CD release show coming up on June 27 at the Somerville Theatre.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 18, 2003 - Recipes Redux

By request, the White Sangria recipe from our Memorial Day BBQ. As close to Cuchi Cuchi's as our R&D team could get.

1 part Triple Sec

3 parts sparkling apple cider

4 parts sauvignon blanc

Fruits: blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, oranges

Here are the other recipes (5K, txt). The strawberry pie... slap-your-mama good.

MONDAY, JUNE 9, 2003 - Sketchy

I climbed the classic Moby Grape again yesterday, a face near what's left of The Old Man. But not before I dropped my glasses on the approach and had to climb the remaining 1200 feet blind.

SUNDAY, JUNE 2, 2003 - Lately

Jackie Brown - (DVD) It's a very tough call, but this is Tarantino's best one. The Beaumont Livingston scene alone is worth the purchase.

Secretary - Dark comedy in the tradition of Virgin Suicides. Here's what others are NOT saying though. Maggie Gyllenhall has a thick... er... briar patch. Definitely your father's nude scene. Tres retro.

Adaptation - A movie about a screenwriter adapting a book, while it's happening; he inadvertantly writes himself into it. All of this happens while As Being John Malkovich is being filmed. This movie has enough layers of meta for your head to pop a hand out an ear and make itself spin.

Fusion Express - Davis Square - Don't judge this place by The mish-mash Euro decor and 80's hit musical selections. It was surprisingly good because the pan-Asian format usually leads to mediocre food.

I'm not sure that this place will be around in a year, though. The prices don't reflect the huge portions that you're given. I just don't see how they're making any money. Cheap eats, and one of the best take-out places ever!

  • Shrimp Tempura
  • Seafood Crazy Noodles
  • Squid with spicy Korean sauce
  • Lime Shrimp Salad

Carambola - Waltham, MA - Good Cambodian cuisine, but it lacked a certain umph. Prices were reasonable and the service was very friendly. Passable, but if you're willing to wait, try The Elephant Walk, its big brother in Cambridge.

  • Cambodian Spring Rolls
  • Somlah Machou (soup)
  • Loc Lac (beef)
  • Crevettes Royal (shrimp)
