TUESDAY, JUNE 29, 2004 - On a break
I'll be on vacation in the Big Apple and Mother Russia until July 12.
We'll catch up after some much needed R&R.

There are new pictures from Cathedral
Ledge, if you enjoy that sort of thing.

FRIDAY, JUNE 18, 2004 - The Tragic Nature of the Korean Psyche
Ernie hits it spot-on with this
funny assessment of South Korean pop videos.

My cousin, an opinionated son of New Jersey, loves to tell this story
about a Korean soap opera that he watched with our uncle and grandmother:
In feudal antiquity, two brothers who were mortal enemies, met for
their final confrontation in the palace courtyard—a battle to
the death. They brutalized one another in their respective fighting
arts, and only stopped to the sound of their mother's screams.
They found her with bloody eyes, and she explained, she'd rather gouge
out her eyes than see her two sons fighting. Dying in their arms, they
reconciled and reunited the kingdoms.
My cousin laughs loud and uncontrollably. Our uncle and grandmother glare
at him, salty tears fresh on their cheeks.
Uncle: What are you laughing at? This is a beautiful story. A tragedy
to see brothers fighting. And the mother... her sacrifice...
Cousin: Uncle, is that the only choice she had to get the brothers
to make up? Could you imagine if all mothers did stuff like that?
Uncle: You're missing the point of the story...
Cousin: ...
Uncle: ... [grunts with disgust]
Cousin: ... [starts laughing again]

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 16, 2004 - Optimizing Images
I
always picture [web designers] as well-paid hipsters sitting in distressed
brick lofts looking all cool, watching their own sites scream through
the office T-1 line faster'n grass through a goose...
This 1999 article on optimizing images, certainly applicable today, opens
with the glory days tone of the tech boom.
Isn't well-paid hipster oxymoronic?

TUESDAY, JUNE 15, 2004 - Safe Arrival
Jen
called from Vologda, Russia, the mid-way
point between Moscow and St. Petersburg. After nearly twenty-four
hours of travelling by planes, trains, and automobiles, she's in good
spirits.
I'm excited to meet her in St. Petersburg on July 6.

TUESDAY, JUNE 8, 2004 - I Swear This Isn't a Gadget Blog
The iTrip
is an FM transmitter from Griffin
Technology which plugs into the top of an iPod and sends music to
any radio as a radio frequency. Sound quality is comparable to a cassette,
but MP3 users are already used to some audio compromise.
I found that spending an additional $30 increased my return on investment.
I listen to it on the train, in the car, and on the home stereo.
Who's friggin' better than me?
